Tableau showing Drake's Game of Bowls

The Tableau took place, in an effort to replicate Plymouth Hoe (site of the memorable game of bowls), at Camber Links overlooking the sea, to which the tram used to run. The participants travelled by tram, and their journey can be seen here.

This is an original painting of the tableau, by Bibelot 2, depicting the scene when - despite being warned of the imminent approach of the ships of the dastardly Spanish Armada, preparing to invade England, Drake coolly insisted on finishing his game of bowls. Queen Elizabeth I just happened to be passing by, accompanied by her royal cat, complete with sapphire collar. Amongst those playing bowls with Drake, were Carew Raleigh, who had been introduced to the weed 'tobacco' by his brother, Sir Walter, and Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex (a friend of the Queen), and also a Scottish nobleman by the name of the Earl of Bothwell. Standing next to Queen Elizabeth was a great favourite of hers - Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. I just hope I have done justice to them all!
